Darryl’s Story and Personal Experience
Hi, I’m Darryl, and my love of hair styling goes way back to when I was a young boy. It all started while growing up in Virginia when I used to give my little cousin’s old Barbie Dolls a style makeover.
She thought they were ugly. And would throw them away. But I saw something in them that she didn’t see. I knew that with a little care and attention, I could make them beautiful. So, I combed, and curled their hair (with aluminum foil), and gave them a fresh face of make-up. Sometimes, I would even dress them up in new outfits I made for them. They looked so nice, my little cousin got mad because she thought I took her new dolls from her, when in fact they were the old ones she threw away!
Making the Transformation
Now don’t worry, I’ve improved a lot since then. And have graduated from styling dolls to real people! But the fact is, I’ve loved to style, cut, and color hair, since I was in elementary school. And started styling the hair of the women in my immediate family, in addition to close friends, when I was a teenager. But I never pursued it professionally until after spending 10 years in corporate America.
From Travel to Tresses
I last worked in corporate travel. And as everyone who knows me knows, I am not the most technical person in the world. So, as my job responsibilities drastically changed, and everything moved toward technology, I decided to accept a layoff package. And took the plunge to realize my lifelong dream of going to school to obtain my cosmetology license.
How bad could it be, right? I was already doing hair as a hobby, and had a small following of ladies hair that I would do for special events and every day looks. Although it seemed I had a natural gift, I wanted to make sure I was licensed and skilled in how to service anyone who needed help, and is why I carefully chose the school I would attend.
I graduated from the Rizzieri Aveda School of Beauty and Hair Styling and passed my final tests, and the State Board Exam with honors. I also received my certifications in coloring, hair straightening, hair weaving, and extensions. Today, I continue to stay up to date on the latest styles and trends through both online, and on-site classes. As well as through my work as a fashion / runway model stylist.
Here Comes the Bride!
Over the years, I developed a love for styling hair for weddings and special events and began to freelance on site wedding hair styling. When brides came into my salon for trial run consultations, they began to ask me if I could come on location to style their hair on their wedding day. Given the salon didn’t offer that special service, I began doing so on request.
After working freelance with numerous brides, and special event clients over the years, I decided to launch my own on location wedding hair styling business with my wife, Chantel. I love the challenges every new bride, wedding party, and event brings, and after those early days styling Barbie dolls, I’ve finally realized my true calling!
I’d be honored if you chose to work with me. And if you do, I promise to do everything I can to make you look and feel stunning! Thanks for taking the time to read my story and I look forward to making your special day a delightful, pleasant, and relaxing experience!
